Book Talk | Mexican Gothic

Image
I've been wanting to read Mexican Gothic for whwat seems like a couple of years now. This year, I put it on my Christmas list and was pleasantly surprised when my mother-in-laws gift was just what I wanted! I also decided to start it right away because I've been in a more Victorian/older literature mood and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was able to scratch that itch! About the Author Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Cachanilla and Canuck, originally from Baja California, she now resides in Vancouver. She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including  Gods of Jade and Shadow  (Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, Ignyte Award),  Mexican Gothic  (Locus Award, British Fantasy Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Aurora Award, Goodreads Award), and Velvet Was the Night (fi...

Book Talk | A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Image
Hey Everyone and Happy New Year! I'm back with another book that caught my attention at Barnes & Nobles and they were having a sale, so I thought, why not? What I ended up picking up was a story about going through the motions of establishing generational wealth and just establishing yourself in a new country and how each generation keeps walking up the ladder. Where does the ladder end? No clue. Here are my thoughts on A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. About the Author Born in Brooklyn, New York to German immigrants, she grew up poor in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. These experiences served as the framework to her first novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943). After marrying George H. E. Smith, she moved with him to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he pursued a law degree at the University of Michigan. At this time, she gave birth to two girls and waited until they were in school so she could complete her higher education. Although Smith had not finished high school, the un...

Book Talk | Death By Bubble Tea

Image
Hey Ya'll! I'm back with another book talk. Now is about the time I talk about how I found this book and well, you know those little cozy mystery books that have a little cat or dog or some kind of animal and the title are something along the lines of, "cat bakery murder" or "what the dog saw at the book store." Well I was looking for one of those books at my local library. I find that I like reading those cozy mysteries, but I don't necessarily want to accumulate/add them to my home library, so when I found out that my local library had a whole dedicated section to these types of books, I thought it was perfect! So I was browsing through the books, when the title popped out at me. The title, along with it's interesting synopsis, and  Good Reads reviews, it seemed like a decent cozy read. So here are my thoughts on Death By Bubble Tea by Jennifer J. Chow . About the Author Jennifer J. Chow writes cozies filled with hope and heritage. She is the Ag...
